ABOUT DR. CAT WOMAN

Biography

The Fran and Ray Stark Collection of 20th-Century Sculpture at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CADr. Catherine Mann, a.k.a. Dr. Cat Woman, is thinking of changing her last name to ‘Woman.’  The very fact that she has not met a person with the last name of ‘Woman’ -- but many with the last name of ‘Mann’ -- speaks volumes about global culture.  Dr. Cat has dedicated her life’s work to examining the experience of women in a global culture of patriarchy, defined as “rule by the father.”  Her purpose has been to identify the means by which any oppressor dominates the oppressed and forces them to submit to his dictates.  While her Theory of Oppression can be applied to all oppressed groups, it focuses primarily on the experience of women.

Dr. Cat earned a B.A. in English with high honors from Princeton University. She then earned an M.A. in English from Stanford University. Thereafter, she completed a Doctorate in Psychology from the California Graduate Institute of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Westwood, where she was Valedictorian at graduation ceremonies. She has been a Professor of English Literature at Santa Monica College for over 12 years, where she teaches subjects including writing, rhetoric, argumentation, American literature, British literature, Minority literature, psychology and social theory.

As a hobby, Dr. Cat has performed opera locally, including on L.A. 36 -- Cable Channel for the Arts.  She also plays acoustic and electric guitar; writes songs about dysfunctional and functional relationships; paints landscapes and seascapes in oils; walks, bikes, hikes, does yoga and meditates.
